Carola e Giovanni wedding at Villa Igiea, Palermo

Carola e Giovanni

An Engagement Morning Between Palermo and Mondello

Villa Igiea, Palermo · May 20, 2024 · Engagement

Villa Igiea in the morning has a different quality than it does in the evening. The light arrives early over the Bay of Palermo, moves through the garden at a low angle, and turns the stone pale gold before the heat sets in. It was here that Carola and Giovanni chose to spend the hours before the rest of their lives became official — not at a venue, not in front of a backdrop, but in a place they already knew and had decided to love.

Carola and Giovanni are from Palermo. This matters. A couple who grows up between Villa Igiea and the sea at Mondello approaches these places differently than visitors do — not as spectacle, but as texture. The gardens, the promenade, the particular clarity of the Tyrrhenian in the early part of the day: these are not settings they dressed up for. They were already home.

The session moved between Villa Igiea's historic grounds and the Mondello seafront, the two locations offering what Palermo always offers when you let it: architecture that asks for nothing except your attention, and light that does the rest. The portraits made here are not constructed compositions. They are two people entirely at ease with where they are, and with each other.

Villa Igiea holds a particular place in Palermo's emotional geography — the Art Nouveau hotel on the Acquasanta bay that has witnessed a century of the city's most significant moments. That Carola and Giovanni chose it for this one is, in its own way, entirely fitting.
